Winter Wreathmaking and Wellbing
4 Dec 2019 - 11 Dec 2019
These really were two very special nights in The Woodhouse room as local nature writer, editor and botanical artist Sonya Patel Ellis (The Herbarium Project // A Botanical World) and floral artist and potter Jessica Webb (Aunt Dahlia // Jessica Webb Pottery) hosted an evening of winter wreath-making and wellbeing.
Beautiful, everlasting wreaths and garlands were made using foraged, homegrown, dried and evergreen flowers and plants; simple sustainable floristry and upcycling techniques were learned; and we were inspired by stories of ancient botanicals and wintertime celebrations such as Saturnalia and Yuletide; and best of all, they helped us navigate our way through the commercial craziness and runaround of Christmas with a few waste-not-want-not tips and a little bit of plant-based pampering for body, mind and spirit.
Watch out for more workshops this year.
And a huge thank you to Sonya and Jess for decorating our pub this Christmas and making it so look beautiful and natural.
Sonya Patel Ellis is a writer, editor, artist and mum of two boys living and working in Forest Gate, London E7. Her recent book The Botanical Bible // Collin's Botanical Bible (Harper Collins, 2018) combines the story of plants and flowers, botany for beginners and growing and gathering with botanical recipes, remedies and nature-inspired art, design and craft. The Heritage Herbal (British Library Publications, out spring 2020) explores the history and importance of herbals from ancient times to the present day, with heritage herb-inspired recipes, remedies and craft ideas to heal, nourish and style, and wonderful illustrations from Elizabeth Blackwell's A Curious Herbal (1737–39). Sonya also founded The Herbarium Project (now part of A Botanical World) in 2013, looking closer at nature and connecting plants and people, largely through the prism of herbaria and pressed botanicals. Exhibitions, events and articles featuring her artworks and writings include Hortus Uptonensis at West Ham Park, Herb Garden at The Marksman, Seeing Floral: The Art of Florilegia at The Garden Museum, Gardens Illustrated and Wilma Journal. She also works with the nearby Forest Gate Community Garden and other community groups on various outreach projects including a 'Dare to Dream' youth social action project and pop-up plant shops and swaps (look out for a main hub in the community garden at 136 Earlham Grove, E7 and a satellite shop coming to The Leytonstone Tavern soon).
Jessica Webb is a floral designer and potter based in Forest Gate, London E7. Formally trained as a dancer and singer, she also helped launch Ace Hotel London in Shoreditch as part of their initial marketing team and has worked in talent management and casting. As a hands-on mum of three, she recently retrained as a florist and potter, producing functional, simple, hand-thrown homeware with a playful twist, and seasonal floral designs and bouquets using home-grown and foraged fresh and lovingly dried and saved plants and flowers. She is passionate about genuinely sharing ways to slow down, celebrate nature, savour what's around you and strive for a more sustainable lifestyle, an ethos that comes through in her Aunt Dahlia and Jessica Webb Pottery artworks and designs.

Leytonstone Arts Trail
6 Jul 2019 - 14 Jul 2019
Every year, @leytonstonearts hold Leytonstone Arts Trail, turning all the spaces and venues into galleries. We were thrilled to be exhibiting @saraharte11 ‘Over & Above’ collection.
Sarah describes these as ‘surveillance paintings’. Where you’re starring at people that can’t see you. Sarah usually captures her subjects looking down from a bridge. We don’t see them close up, they just pass us by. Sarah says this reflects every day Urban Living, where we see the same people passing us every day, but we don’t know them or stop at speak to them - evoking a feeling of detachment and intimacy. In the paintings, the viewer gets to be the spy and form their own opinion of who that person is and where they are going.
The collection really resonated with us. Each of us saw ourselves or someone we know going about their day in urban life.
This is Sarah’s first time in the trail as a solo artist - she has kindly said we can hold onto her collection for a little longer, so her work is still here if you'd like to see it. And it's available to buy.
See more on her website.

Meet The Brewer – Howling Hops
7 Jun 2019
Our first Meet The Brewer night was hosted by Hackney’s Howling Hops. They brought something for everyone with their eight Tap Takeover - from dinner and pudding ales, to lager and sour beers. They even kept the ‘cask v keg’ discussion alive by bringing their Pale XX on both! Chef added in some interesting food pairings to truly treat the taste buds.
Next one is being planned…watch this space..

Bank Hol Beats
25 May 2019
Following the love for our Beers from The Borough DJ, @tomduvalmusic returned to ease us into the next Bank Holiday weekend with some Soulful Funk. As he describes, ‘Soulful, Groovy and packed with Funk’. Playing out in the garden, he set us up perfectly for the long weekend, playing an amazing 6 hour set that took us from the afternoon into the night. There were some good garden vibes that night!
Beers from the Borough
4 May 2019
We were so excited to host our first ever Craft Beer Festival. As part of Waltham Forest London Borough of Culture 2019, we featured Waltham Forest only breweries – WildCard, Pretty Decent, Signature, East London Brewing, Neckstamper, Pillars and Nirvana. It was a real celebration of local beer. We opened the garden for the first time, had the BBQ going and a DJ playing. Of course, being a Bank Holiday weekend, we saw four seasons in a day – which just made the vibe even better – seeing locals pitching in to hold up the Gazebo in a downpour and the pub heaving!
11 Apr 2019 - 18 Apr 2019
Over Easter, we held our first ever Little Taverner’s clubs. We kicked things off high tempo with JingleBop - a fun, interactive music and movement group for parents and babies/toddlers. Next we moved onto our very first craft club, hosted by ‘Imagine & Create’ - individual and group crafts for children. And finally, local ceramics café, Creative Biscuit, rounded off the holidays with an Easter themed ceramics painting session.
